Dog’s Hell

Since 1995, we know through newspaper articles and descriptions that there are inconceivable conditions at the dog support area on the Portuguese Island Porto Santo.
Deranged male dogs, non-castrated she-dogs, newborn and abandoned puppets are penned up in a blocked up area visible only through a small trellised entrance door. They are being exposed to rain and sun because of a lack of roofing.

Sporadic and insufficient feeding and an over-population lead to a slaughter amongst the dogs. Puppets have no chance to survive. There is no medical treatment.

Even articles in a local newspaper of Madeira, headlined with „ dogs slaughter themselves in cages“ did lead to no changes.

Political authorities of the island are not concerned about the situation at the dog support area and the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals on the main island Madeira does up to now not feel responsible at all.

Quite to the contrary, when we tried to start castration activities together with some German veterinarians on Porto Santo, the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals of Madeira threatened to start legal action against us stating that activities of foreign veterinarians in Portugal were illegal. Although no Portuguese veterinarian has ever cared for any of the cats and dogs on Porto Santo.
