On-site Solution

One target of ANIMA Hilfe für Tiere e.V. is the pacification of the small island Porto Santo by way of solving the problem of overpopulation and the problems resulting thereof (Capture dogs and lock them up respective kill them) on site. Only such animals that are threatened with the killing and that do not have any possibility to lead a normal dog’s life are taken to Germany. Locking up and killing the dogs does solve the problem only on a minor basis but never the reason of the unregulated reproduction.

ANIMA Hilfe für Tiere e.V. wants to tackle the problem at the grass-root level and try to take regulative action.

We appeal for pet owners to attend a free-of-charge castration with their animals and additionally award bringing a free living she-dog to those castration actions with €5. These she-dogs will then be castrated, registered and then brought back to the place where she had been „captured“ for castration purposes.

Often the animals find enough food to make their living in freedom and sometimes are also fed by human beings. Almost all male dogs do have a home and belong to some human being whereas she-dogs often lose their homes due to their first heat and consequently being mated. Puppets are simply not wanted.

As the she-dog loses her owner, her puppets are born in freedom and remain unregistered and uncontrolled. They are joined by even more abandoned dogs. This is why the amount of the stray animals that do live on the streets might not change significantly.

The responsible mayor of Porto Santo Island could easily realise this vicious cycle and, if he only wanted, arrange for a decree that dogs with an attachment figure or a so-called “psychological parent” and a feeding place to be allowed to remain there, provided, of course, they have been castrated. A solution that would definitely be accepted by the population.

How would castrating and leaving the animals at their feeding places make an impact on the old feeding places?

If time’s up for the old dogs, there will be no younger ones taking over their places. The number of stray animals will therefore reduce itself steadily.

Without this birth control, the stray animal population will increase. Costs for accommodation and final killing of those animals, borne by the commune, will become immeasurable. Income from tourism will fail to appear as tourists will be sick of those amounts of stray poor creatures and rather tend to travel to other places. ANIMA Hilfe für Tiere e.V. offers its support to all relevant people following this idea of resolution.

There are already positive examples: Fuerteventura, a Spanish island, practises this solution for years now, supported by English and German animal welfare campaigner, quite to the joy of tourists and with the consent of local hotels. For years now, South Italy successfully publicises the „Lega pro Animale“, managed by the German veterinarian Dorothea Friz.
