The mongrel, a gift of mother nature.

Often people ask us “what IS a mongrel?” and shortly thereafter a comment follows “my sister/uncle/aunt owns a mongrel, a Rottweiler-Doberman-Mix". This, in fact, is not a mongrel but a crossbreed, an animal bred by the mix of two races. Such crossbreds are often sired and born with the approval of the relevant animal keeper and are then offered as mongrels, which, in fact, they are not. Even hobby breeders have realised that mongrels are first choice demand. German animal keepers often have experienced the expensive so-called breed-specific diseases and the short lives of breed dogs.
Veterinaries immediately recall the typical suffering, deformation and distinctive features of the relevant races.

    Midget-races
Midget-forms of Yorkshire-Terrier, Shi-Tsu, Chihuahua, Small Pinscher, Poodle, Schnauzer often suffer from:
    • Malformation in knee and hip joints
    • Collapsing of the air tube/trachea due to misshapen supporting cartilages
    • Incomplete change of teeth, propensity to periodontosis
    • Difficulties in giving birth due to minor pelvis
    Short muzzled races
Mops, Pekinese, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, tend to:
    • Difficulty of breathing, nasal mucosa infection due to squeezed nose
    • Faucal infection, danger of suffocation on agitation and/or heat due to the small throat, a much too long velum and the big tongue.
    • Difficulties in giving birth due to too big heads of the puppets
    Curious extreme breeding
The chinese plait dog (Shar-Pei) has been bred with increasingly many skin plaits
    • Eye diseases due to much too narrow eyelids
    • Weeping eczema between the skin plaits
    Big races
Main sufferings of the big dogs such as the German Shepherd, Saint Bernard, Basset, Bernese dog, Mastino, Mastiff or Great Dane are:
    • Bslipped disk
    • Pink eye due to wide palpebral fissure mainly with dogs having hanging
    • Cardiac defect
    • Misshapen hip and ellbowjoints

Breeders’ ambition and pride of ownership produced quite eccentric dog breeds where hereditary diseases were assenting put up with. Only after the animal welfare law of 1986 became valid, such defect breeding became prohibited. Let us hope that breeding healthy and beautiful dogs will now increase.

The main aim of the pedigree dog ibreeding is the looks (size, built, fur and eye colour) and not its character and intelligence, Some breeds are bred for their aggressive temper. Inbreeding, bad keeping of the animals and using she-dogs as a breeding machine cause more defects and damages. In our increasingly shrinking habitat, the demand is concentrating more and more on healthy, clever and compatible dogs. A dog that can be kept inhouse, that does not mind climbing stairsand does not bark too much without reason and that opens the hearts of small and big people with its funny look.

Mongrels are various breeds in one without a pedigree and partent dog’s certificates. They are mainly found in places where they can spawn freely. Both parent dogs hold the best attributes already. The puppets are born outdoors and only the strongest survive. They are living in packs and inherit and learn the best social attributes from their mother dogs where they are taught a minimum of aggression towards other pack members and other dogs.

In Germany, more and more people become aware of those amenities. With their attitude, people, who do not want show off objects or prestige goods, help the mongrels to a wider range of acceptance and circulation.
